Understanding DVD Menu

DVD menu is the first exposure of your presentations. A professional looking DVD menu can easily catch your audience's attention. Wondershare PPT2DVD provides you an innovative DVD menu editor, which can help you create eye-catching DVD menus with ease.

In the third step DVD menu, it clearly states the menu structure which may include Root Menu, title menu and Play option. You can choose to disable all the DVD menus if you want the output DVD to be played automatically when it is mounted into the DVD player or DVD drive. You may also choose to design and preview the menu here.

Disable DVD menu: Tick to disable DVD menu in the output. Your presentations will be played automatically in this way. If you apply manual play mode to your presentations, the Root menu will be kept, even if you choose to disable DVD menu.

Design: Click to choose a template or customize the DVD menus. For more detailed information about using Menu Design, please refer to corresponding section.

Preview: Click to launch the DVD menu simulator, which simulates the behavior of DVD menu when you play the final DVD on TV. You can use mouse or the DVD menu simulator to perform operations on the simulation area, it will behave exactly the same as the final result does.

Note: This is a simulator for DVD menu only, preview of presentations is not available here.

DVD remote control simulator: This is a soft-remote-control integrated in menu simulator. You can find those buttons on normal DVD remote controls. The simulator includes four cross direction selection buttons, which allow you to select items on the menu, and the center one is the confirm button. The Menu and Title button are for switching to different menus when playing presentation.

DVD Menu structure

  • Root Menu is the first page when you put the output DVD to your DVD machine. It would be enabled by default if you enable both auto-play mode and manual-play mode, on Importing screen. You can select how your presentations will be played on Root Menu. Click on a play mode to go to the title menu of corresponding mode. Following illustration is a sample of Root Menu:

Title Menu shows the presentations contained on this DVD. Each presentation is shown as a thumbnail on this page. Title menu only shows the presentations with corresponding play mode enabled. For example, you have eight presentations in a project, and only six are set to be played automatically on Import screen, you should see the four presentations on the title menu of automatic mode. Following is a sample of title menu:

Click on a thumbnail to play the corresponding presentations during REAL playback. Since the simulation area only simulates the DVD menu behaviors, presentation preview will not be available in menu preview.

Loop all presentations
, click to play all presentations under the automatic mode one by one, and the play will be looped.

  • Note: Title menu of manual mode does not have this Loop option.
Click   to go back to the Root Menu. If there are five or more presentations in auto-play mode or manual-play mode, this couple of button   will be shown in title menu and you can click it to go to the previous page or next page.

  • Play Options will be shown at the end of each presentation, or when you click Menu button on remote control during playback. You can choose to take an action from this page. Following is a sample of play options page:

You may see different options on your own menus provided you import one or more presentations and enable different play mode or both. Here is only a sample.

Next presentation: Click to start the next presentation.

Replay: Click to play current presentation again.

Change to slide sorter view: Click to switch to slide sorter view for current presentation. All slides contained in this presentation will be shown as thumbnails on the screen in this view.

Back to the last slide: Click to go back to the last slide of the presentation.

Resume: Click to go to the previous slide played just now. If you press the menu button on remote control during playback accidentally, this function is practical.

Click to back to the title menu. Click to back to the Root Menu.

    • Apply to All: click to apply your settings to all DVD menus.

    3. Besides, PPT2DVD provides you a useful tool to arrange the relative positions of elements. On the preview area, drag a rectangle to enclose the objects you want to arrange, then you will see the following tool bar flowing over the preview area.

    Menu Style

There are two ways to create your menu style.

One is to choose template for the template gallery. It is convenient. A menu template includes background, frames, icons and buttons (some elements are only available for specific menus). Click on a thumbnail of template from the gallery and the changes will be shown on the preview area.

Another is to customize each element on menu templates to create your own menu style. And this combination will be saved for the next project automatically. Click [Customize] to switch to the customize panel.

    • Gallery: PPT2DVD provides four categories here, which are Business, Family, Education and Celebration. You can choose a proper category from the drop-down list, and then select a template for the menu.

    • Elements: When you click Customize button to design your own menu and choose different menu type, you would get different elements settings, including Background, Buttons, Frames or Icons. You can locate at one to specify an alternative element you like for the menu at the base of the template.

    • Gradient: PPT2DVD allows you to use gradient color to fill the background. There are three colors to choose. You can change the linear angle by entering a degree on the text field, and change the color stops by moving the slider. You can see changes on the preview area in real-time.

    • Image from file: Click to import an image from your hard drives as the background.

    • Note: The background here refers to the one used for current selected Page. It will NOT affect your PowerPoint files or other DVD Menus.

To change the captions in an object, click on the object and input the new caption in the editing area.
Besides, you can change the font, size, color text alignment and style of the caption. Apply to All button is used to apply the current text decoration or style to the text boxes on other menus.

    Advanced Menu Settings

    Menu Properties
    Disable this menu
: Tick it to disable current menu. And you need to select an action that will be taken at the end of show.

  • Menu Options (available for play options page only): It lists the options on current menu. Remove a tick on the left of an item to remove corresponding object on the play option menu.

  • Note: Here is only a sample of the play mode (Manual Mode) if you import two or more presentations and choose manual play mode or both. You will see different menu options on the list, if you are editing title menu of automatic mode or just import one presentation in your project.

    Background Music

  • Background Music
Besides the visual properties, you are also allowed to add background music for DVD Menus. This music only takes effect to the current Menu, in other words, if you add background music to the title menu of automatic mode, it only plays when title menu is shown.

  • There is a sound clip by default. To change background music, click   to locate an audio clip from your hard drives, and then click Open. After you import an audio file, you can click   to play it, or click   to remove the current music. If you do not want to add background music, you can also click to remove the default audio clip.
